The Buddy Walk is one of DSACO's most important events of the year. More than 3,000 people from the Oklahoma City area and around the state walk to promote awareness for all people with Down syndrome. In addition, funds are raised to support research, education and advocacy efforts.
The Buddy Walk® was created by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) in 1995 to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The Buddy Walk has grown from 17 walks to nearly 300 walks planned for 2011 across the country and around the world. Last year alone, 285,000 people participated in Buddy Walk! They raised more than $11.2 million to benefit local programs and services as well as the national advocacy initiatives that benefit all individuals with Down syndrome.
