The mission of the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma is to “raise awareness and provide resources, as well as promote acceptance and inclusion for people with Down syndrome.” As we focus on the ability and not the disability, we are able to create a world that is full of promise and opportunity.
Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring genetic abnormality in the United States, with one out of every 691 babies being diagnosed. In the past, these children were often looked at as too disabled to participate in day to day activities and were institutionalized shortly after birth.
Oh how the times have changed. In the past two decades, the average lifespan of a person with Down syndrome has increased dramatically due to medical, education and social intervention. Many people with Down syndrome are living well into their 60s and 70s. They are active in the community holding jobs, living on their own or with limited assistance and enjoying everything the world has to offer.
DSACO’s focus is not only on educating families of and people with Down syndrome, but also to work with medical professionals, therapist, educators and community members at large to make these things possible. We hope through the programs and services we make available, we are able to help people with Down syndrome become empowered, employable and independent.
In an effort to maintain and grow our programs and services, we are reaching out to individuals and businesses throughout the State of Oklahoma to ask for support. Together, we can create a world of poss-abilities for all people with Down syndrome.
