Honey, I Blew Up the Curriculum - Adaptations and Accommodations: The IDEAL Method of Adapting Curriculum will guide parents and educators to work together to adapt curriculum to meet the needs of a diverse classroom. Participants will learn how to make easy adaptations that will help children access the general education curriculum and be a full participant in the educational process.

Objectives of the workshop include:
• Identifying the learner, curriculum and environment
• Learning eight types of adaptations to use while working with students
• Authentic assessment of a student with academic challenges.
• Adopting simple, easy-to-use tools and strategies such as: mini books, previewing, auto summarize, graphic webs, picture/photo stores and books and technology

About the Speakers

Nancy Brown, co-founder of Butterflies for Change, is an inclusion consultant and has worked for many years with the inclusion initiative for the Illinois State Board of Education. She has facilitated district wide systems change in many school districts and provides technical assistance to districts, schools, teachers and families. Nancy has worked with persons with disabilities for over 30 years and has been involved in advocacy for individuals with disabilities through her work with the Family Support Network and a variety of state and National advocacy organizations. She specializes in inclusive education, person centered planning, adaptations and accommodations, parent issues, inclusive social emotional models of support, organizational development, transition, and access and equity for all students. Nancy’s training includes: Cognitive Coaching, The Green Circle Program, Character Counts, MAPs & PATHs, The National Coalition Building Institute Training and Adaptive Schools Training. She is the co-author of Models of Support and Kid Konnections.

Bridget Brown, co-founder of Butterflies for Change, was the first person with a disability who was fully included in her school district through her entire educational journey. Bridget is an inspirational national speaker and was a guest consultant for Project CHOICES. She is a strong advocate of inclusive education and community living options for adults with disabilities. She loves to work with high school students with disabilities teaching self determination and self directed IEPs. She also speaks to students about disabilities and respect and encourages them to be champions. Bridget has been trained as a PATH/MAP facilitator & she is a graduate of the STARS advocacy program through the ARC of Illinois. Bridget recently received the 2012 National Champion of Change Award from the National Down Syndrome Society. She also received the Association of University Centers on Disabilities 2009 National Leadership in Advocacy Award in recognition of her contributions to the Association and the disabilities field.
