When I started occupational therapy school, I wanted to find a place that I could be involved and give back to the community and that’s how I found DSACO! After volunteering the first time two years ago, I absolutely LOVED volunteering at DSACO and have not stopped. DSACO has taught me so much. I love getting to be part of helping an individual become independent and/or supporting an individual become confident in their independence, whether it be helping a child learn to read or learning how to cook a meal in the kitchen. DSACO has also taught me so much about advocacy and spreading awareness, which is something that has become something I practice in my professional and everyday life, and I am constantly learning something from and amazed by the confidence displayed by the self-advocates.
My favorite part about DSACO though is getting to know each of the individuals and their families. Honestly, one of the main reasons that I love volunteering at DSACO is because they have been such a blessing in my life! As an out-of-state student, the individuals, the families, and staff at DSACO have become like my second family here in OKC. I have made friendships that I know will last a lifetime and I have become a better person through the support, encouragement, and overall love that DSACO has given to me over the years, which is why I am #Crazy4DSACO everyday!
