Alissa’s Journey with DSACO Tutoring

Bettie & Alissa

When Alissa first started in the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma’s (DSACO) tutoring program, reading was a challenge. She often felt hesitant, unsure of herself, and easily frustrated. Her parents were searching for something that would give her not only academic skills, but also the confidence to use them.

That’s when Alissa was paired with Mrs. Bettie, a tutor at DSACO who takes a whole-child approach to learning. From the very first session, the match felt like something special.

More Than Tutoring — Building Confidence and Friendship

Together, Alissa and Bettie focus on reading and decoding skills, but their sessions go far beyond academics. Bettie weaves in games and activities that build good sportsmanship, communication, and social skills. Their time together is full of encouragement and laughter — often echoing through the DSACO office.

What started as tutoring quickly became mentorship and friendship. Bettie is not only Alissa’s teacher, but also her cheerleader and supporter — someone who sees her potential and believes in her every step of the way.

Milestones Worth Celebrating

One of Alissa’s proudest milestones came when she independently typed a word into a search bar on her iPad. For the first time, she didn’t need help spelling it out. She looked up at her mom with the biggest smile, proud of her accomplishment.

It was a simple moment, but for Alissa and her family, it represented incredible growth. She had gone from hesitant and unsure to capable and confident — and that confidence carries into every part of her life.

Her mom shares:
“This program has not only improved Alissa’s reading skills but has also given her a mentor, cheerleader, and friend in Mrs. Bettie. Watching Alissa light up before and after each session says it all — she’s learning, growing, and thriving, and that’s worth celebrating.”

The Power of Community Support

Stories like Alissa’s are possible because of the generosity of people who believe in the potential of individuals with Down syndrome. DSACO’s tutoring program is offered free of charge to families, which means the program relies on community support to keep growing.

That’s why we created the 321 Society — a group of monthly donors who make tutoring and enrichment possible. By giving $50 each month, you provide one free tutoring session for a student like Alissa.

Your gift doesn’t just cover a lesson. It provides:

  • Academic progress in reading, math, and more
  • Confidence that carries into school and daily life
  • Social skills like communication, turn-taking, and teamwork
  • The encouragement of a mentor who truly believes in them
