Breaking Barriers: Josie Kohn's Journey Toward Inclusive Leadership

Josie Kohn

At the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma (DSACO), we believe that every individual deserves the opportunity to lead, thrive, and inspire. This summer, that belief is brought to life through Josie Kohn—a vibrant, trailblazing young woman with Down syndrome who is making history as the first Inasmuch Foundation Community Fellow with an intellectual disability.

Josie’s journey is more than just an internship; it’s a story of empowerment, growth, and inclusive employment in Oklahoma. As DSACO’s summer intern, Josie is gaining hands-on experience in nonprofit leadership, program coordination, and community engagement. Her days are filled with meaningful work—from supporting events to planning programs that foster inclusion and advocacy for individuals with disabilities.

But Josie is not new to DSACO. She has been involved in our programs for years, always showing up with creativity, joy, and a deep desire to make a difference. Now, as part of our team, she is using her voice and her talents to advocate not just for herself, but for others in the Down syndrome community.

“I love being part of DSACO,” Josie says. “I’m learning a lot, meeting new people, and helping others like me. I want to show the world that people with Down syndrome can do anything.”

And she’s doing just that. Through this fellowship, Josie is building valuable job skills in communication, public speaking, planning, and teamwork. She is also laying the foundation for her own career aspirations—dreaming big about a future in fashion merchandising and event planning. This internship is helping her take real steps toward independence and personal success.

When she’s not at DSACO, Josie is preparing for her sophomore year at Oklahoma State University, where she is enrolled in the Operation Orange Scholars Program. This inclusive college experience is designed for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, giving them the tools they need to succeed in higher education and beyond.

“Josie is making history through this fellowship,” said DSACO Executive Director Sarah Soell. “She’s showing everyone what’s possible when we support individuals of all abilities. Her impact will be felt far beyond our office—she’s inspiring others to believe in a more inclusive future.”

The Inasmuch Foundation Community Fellowship is a summer program that places college-aged students in impactful nonprofit roles across Oklahoma City. Josie’s placement with DSACO marks a powerful step toward inclusive employment, helping shift the narrative about what leadership can look like.

“Josie is a trailblazer,” said Inasmuch Foundation Chairman and CEO Bob Ross. “We’re proud to support her journey and to watch her build a future where everyone belongs.”

Josie’s story is a celebration of possibility. It reminds us that with the right support and opportunities, individuals with Down syndrome can lead, achieve, and change the world. At DSACO, we are honored to be part of her journey—and excited for the many lives she will continue to touch.
